The Mystery of Magic, also known as the Mystery of Mogic and the Misery of Magic, is a mysterious group of bureaucratic wizards who appear to be based on the Ministry of Magic from the books. They seem to hold a lot of power over Hogwarts, and are able to send anyone they want to random places in the Caucasus probably (which are probably meant to be Azkaban).

Unlike most factions, it is not outwardly stated whether the Mystery of Magic aligns more with the goffs or the preps, though due to the dress of known members and the fact Professor Trevolry was arrested for being "too gottik", it seems likely they are fairly preppy.

Role in the story[]

Cornelia Fudge

Cornelia Fudge

The Mystery of Magic first mentioned in Chapter 20, where Enoby sees them arriving at Hogwarts in a vision. They then make their first appearance in Chapter 21, with Cornelia Fudge and Doris Rumbridge shouting at Albert Dumblydore in the great hall. Due to the threat Voldemort poses, the bureaucrats from the Mystery want Hogwarts closed. Cornelia Fudge points out that the "BARK LORD" is planning to kill the students. Doris Rumbridge points out that Dumblydore is unfit to be principal, that his Alzheimer's is dangerous, and that he should "retry". Dumblydore refuses to close down the school, revealing to the Mystery that one of his students is the only one able to stop Voldemort. This being, of course, none other than Ebony.

Later in the story, the Mystery seems to take complete control over Hogwarts. Cornelia Fudge arrives at the school and takes over teaching Potions once Snap is sent to Abkhazian. Fudge tells Draco that Dumblydore has been imprisoned due to him being "week" and having "kancer." After the goffs anger him by talking during class, Fudge runs to "Profesor Bridge" for help, implying Doris Rumbridge is the new principal. Rumbridge also comes back to the school; she informs the students that Professor Sinister has been sent to Azerbaijan for being "too gottik." Rumbridge also brings back Dumblydore to teach Deviation; not even an hour after being sent to Azerbaijan.

The last we hear of the Mystery of Magic is in Chapter 42, when Snap, Loopin and Hargrid are on the loose in the school. Cornelia is said to be on his way to the school to help defend the students, but he does not actually appear.

Differences from the original[]

Ironically, the Mystery of Magic seems to be more benevolent than the original Ministry of Magic. While the Ministry of Magic under Fudge's rule went to great lengths to pretend Voldemort wasn't at large while trying to defame both Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore, who both proclaimed the Dark Lord returned, the Mystery of Magic immediately recognized Voldemort as a threat. They expressed concern for the safety of the students and, understandably, doubted if Albert Dumblydore was capable of handling the threat of Voldemort. The Mystery even wanted to close down the school to protect said students.

On the other hand, the Mystery is far more likely to send people to prison than the Ministry. According to the Mystery, being too gothic or too old and weak is a crime that warrants being sentenced to Azerbaijan. The real Ministry, while corrupt, did not put people in jail for such minor infractions. While they did imprison people under false charges, the charges mentioned were serious enough to warrant a prison sentence if true.

Another difference is that the Mystery of Magic is more directly involved with Hogwarts, while the Ministry from the original books mostly left the goings on at Hogwarts up to the current headmaster. If, for example, a teacher is incapable of doing their job, the Ministry would leave the process of finding a replacement entirely up to Hogwarts. The only time they directly intervened in this process, was during the fifth Harry Potter book, where the unnatural amount of control the Ministry was exerting over Hogwarts was a major plot point. In the My Immortal-verse, the Mystery itself is responsible for the faculty of Hogwarts. When, for example, Snap was sent to Azerbaijan, the (probable) Minister himself, Cornelia Fudge, took over his Portents class. Later, the Mystery arranges for Dumblydore to teach Deviation, as Professor Trevolry is sent to Azerbaijan for being too Gottik.
